Here at Lewis Landscape Services, we strive to do everything with the utmost of care and professionalism. When we install a new sod lawn we take careful care to do everything necessary to insure you’ll have a healthy lawn for years to come.
We start by killing off the existing lawn, foreign grasses and the weeds that are in your existing lawn. Next step is amending the soil and tilling in a 3-way custom blend of 60% sandy loam, 15% garden mulch, and 15% mushroom compost. These amendments help with drainage and give your soil the right nutrition that new sod needs.
Then for lawns with heavy clay and drainage problems, we have the opportunity to till in Turface into the soil profile that helps improve drainage, soak up extra moisture and create better permeability in the soil – so water can move through the soil more easily. This is an optional add-on.
From here we grade out the soil and compact it with a roller. Then we roll out your new sod. In most cases, we will install RTF (Rhyzomatous Tall Fescue) which is a new improved variety of sod that is a little darker green, fuller thicker mat of grass, is drought resistant (requires 30% less water to stay green) and requires half of the fertilizer of regular perennial ryegrass. RTF is also much more shade tolerant than ryegrass but also does great in full sun plus, it’s self-repairing – it fills in it’s own bare spots! It’s a superior variety of turfgrass in almost every way.
The next step is to address the sprinkler zone that waters the lawn. If you have an existing irrigation system, we’ll find out where the pipes are and work around them. If you don’t already have an irrigation system, now might be the time to consider adding one. A good irrigation system is an essential part of a successful lawn and will help ensure your new lawn will last much longer than one without a sprinkler system.
After we’re finished, you can rest assured that your new sod lawn will look beautiful, have a much better soil profile to grown in and turn out great long term.
